For teeth with moderately sized caries, ceramic onlays represent an excellent restorative option. The newest ceramic materials and bonding technology make ceramic onlays a great conservative alternative to full coverage crowns. Ceramic onlays are made from tooth-colored, high-strength ceramics, which is twice as strong as natural tooth structure.
This procedure is less invasive than full crown restoration, requiring less tooth reduction, yet providing more durability and strength, compared to a traditional dental filling. This treatment is recommended when tooth fracture or decay extends deep into the tooth, or when chips on the cusps and ridges (biting edges) of the teeth are present, but the compromised areas do not involve the majority of the tooth structure.
